The Guide to Volunteering at TIFF

(TIFF : Toronto International Film Festival)

One of the most exciting things I did after moving to Toronto last year was volunteering at TIFF. I had heard a lot about TIFF and always wanted to be part of the festival, experiencing it to the fullest. Fortunately, I had the amazing opportunity to join as a volunteer. If you’re dreaming of becoming a TIFF volunteer this year, I’d love to share everything you need to know—from A to Z!
1. How to Become a TIFF Volunteer
In 2024, the volunteer application opened in May. TIFF usually closes applications once they have enough volunteers, so if you’re interested, I highly recommend subscribing to the TIFF Volunteer newsletter to stay updated. → (Link)
TIFF Volunteer Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be available for at least four (4) shifts during the festival period. Volunteers can only take one shift per day, with each shift lasting 4 to 6 hours.
- Have strong communication skills and a good understanding of English (knowledge of additional languages is an asset).

In the application, you’ll find questions such as How did you hear about volunteering?, Why do you want to volunteer for the festival? These questions are a great opportunity to showcase your passion and motivation, so make sure to write a persuasive and compelling answer. Once you submit your application, TIFF will review all applications and notify you if you’re approved.

2. Things to Do Before Volunteering at TIFF as a TIFF Volunteer
Before starting your volunteer work, there are a few essential steps to complete:
- Select your preferred work location (This will be considered, but final assignments depend on the festival’s needs.)
- Complete the online orientation
- Sign up for shifts
- Attend the in-person orientation
- Prepare your volunteer outfit
Once your application is approved, you can update your profile with your preferred work location. You will later receive an email confirming your assigned team. Online orientation is mandatory for all volunteers. It covers location-specific details, dress codes, and includes a quiz that must be completed to proceed. After that, you can sign up for shifts when the schedule opens. You must sign up for at least four (4) shifts, each lasting a minimum of 4 hours. If you don’t complete four shifts, you will be considered as not having participated. Next, you’ll attend an in-person orientation, which is usually held by work location. I attended both TIFF Lightbox and Scotiabank Theatre orientations. At this session, you will receive your TIFF ID card, which must be worn during shifts and is also needed for rush line movie access.

⚠️Dress Code
- Smart Casual – TIFF volunteer T-shirt + any bottoms
- Business Casual – TIFF volunteer T-shirt + dress pants/skirt + dress shoes
- Black Bottoms & Shoes – TIFF volunteer T-shirt + black pants/skirt + black shoes
Comfortable shoes are essential since you’ll be standing for long periods. A small bag and a reusable water bottle will also make your volunteering experience more comfortable.
3. Responsibilities and review of TIFF Volunteer
I completed a total of six shifts during the festival. Many volunteers finished the minimum four shifts and then enjoyed the festival by watching movies or attending events. Since I wanted to gain as much experience as possible, I signed up for six.

⚠️Main Responsibilities by Shift
TIFF Lightbox
- Atrium: Lobby & exterior (lobby, ticket box, rush line, etc.)
- Cinema: Inside the theater (ticket scanning, audience guidance)
Scotiabank Theatre
- Outside: Exterior (rush line, audience exit management)
- Inside: Inside the theater (ticket scanning, audience guidance)
- ACE: Backup staff assisting different venues as needed (can leave early if not assigned)
Volunteers check in and out with their Volunteer Captain, who assigns and manages shifts. Here are some useful tips:
- Outside shifts can be in the lobby or outdoors, so dress warmly—even in September, it can be chilly.
- ACE volunteers can be placed anywhere, so wear the most versatile black bottoms + black shoes dress code.
- Bring snacks to eat during your break.

In 2015, while I was in Vancouver, I volunteered at the Vancouver International Film Festival for the first time. That experience literally sparked my passion about film festivals, and it led me to work at various film festivals in Korea from 2017 to 2023. After nine years, I am in Canada and I volunteered at a film festival again. Nine years ago, did I ever imagine that I would build a career in film festivals? Probably not.
Why not become part of North America’s largest and most influential film festival in fall 2025? With TIFF’s 50th anniversary this year, the festival will be bigger and more exciting than ever. I hope this opportunity allows you to experience a new world and dream new dreams!
